The General Assembly concluded the 2009 legislative session and I am convinced that no visionary plan was
conveyed to the people of North Carolina addressing our current economic dilemma. We continue to be faced
with declining revenues and high unemployment.
Major tax burdens were imposed on individuals and businesses in the 2009-2010 Budget. The tax and fee
increases will hurt many businesses, small and large, and will have a negative impact on businesses
locating in North Carolina.
As one of the new members, I found many of my days frustrating, to say the least. With only marginal cuts
to spending, The General Assembly approved a $19 billion spending plan that cut jobs, forced school boards
to make cuts in education, and raised nearly $1 billion in new taxes.
I am committed to creating a positive business-friendly environment in North Carolina with more focus on job
creation, economic development, lower taxes, and less government. Raising taxes during a recession neither
creates a positive business climate nor grows our economy.
When we return to the General Assembly, it should be with a new approach to develop long-term solutions for
our economic growth and the future of North Carolina and her citizens.
Excessive taxing must be put to a stop.
We need to send a message that a new approach is needed during the upcoming short session. Thank you for
the investment you have made in our State.
